When a measurement workshop is enough — and when it is not
Workshops create shared definitions. They do not replace a full usage audit when the underlying extracts are messy or incomplete.
A measurement workshop suits teams that already have usable extracts and disagree mainly about definitions. Product wants journey-level rates; infrastructure wants resource saturation. Facilitated agreement unlocks progress.
A workshop is a poor fit when billing exports are incomplete, resource tags are missing, or nobody can explain which services back the checkout path. In those cases, an audit that inspects the extracts comes first.
If your team can answer “what are the three journeys that matter this quarter?” but not “which cloud services serve them?”, start with mapping work inside an audit rather than a half-day session.
Choose the lighter engagement when alignment is the blocker. Choose the deeper engagement when evidence is the blocker.
